Honorable Mention Flying Lessons M. Kathryn Black I lay on a lounge with my neck extended and stared into the palaces of trees; the ramparts of sun webbed leaves rose in levels beyond my comprehension, a stairway to the sky. They came through the golden canopy one by one, then in groups, white birds spiraled out of light towards me; they were a cyclone of wings, a helix of glistening feathers rushing. They entered me as a diver does the sea, aiming for the center of my heart. I opened my arms, gazed in wonderment. Rain started and I looked around, baffled; what is water but another way to fly?
